Here’s what’s happening this week:

✨ Local Happenings and New Openings ✨

• Two Historic Crew Ships Sink in Red Hook: Nick Bello reported that Victory Chimes, a historic schooner connected to Crew, sank in Red Hook just days after the historic Pilot went down on July 1. The cause of both incidents remains under investigation. Crew, the company behind Fireboat at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Montero's Bar & Grill on Atlantic Avenue, and the former floating restaurant Pilot, describes its mission this way: "We create, restore, and operate places in and around the water. We preserve old ships and buildings, and bring forgotten waterfronts back to life." The company is now focused on understanding what happened and safely raising the Pilot.

• Good news for Ban Bé fans: the beloved neighborhood bakery is teasing a major announcement. After closing its original storefront earlier this year, founder Doris Hồ-Kane says "breaking news" is coming next week.

• A new neighborhood bar is getting ready to open at 479 Atlantic Avenue. Bronze Tavern recently unveiled its new signage and says an official opening date is coming soon.

• Poppy's is bringing back its popular Summer Picnic Series at its Henry Street location, just in time for Brooklyn Bridge Park's Movies With A View. Every Thursday, stop by for a special picnic-friendly menu before heading to the waterfront.

• Red Hook Pool, which is one of five Olympic-sized pools in Brooklyn, is currently shut down due to mechanical issues. Last year, the swimming spot’s opening was delayed due to a broken pipe.

Live jazz on a patio at Goog Thai Cook Shop sounds like a pretty great way to kick off the weekend. Hope you find something fun to check out this week, too!

• We were sad to hear that Plymouth Cafe, a longtime Brooklyn Heights staple at Henry and Pineapple Streets, has officially closed after 42 years in business. The deli served its last sandwich last week. A new food-focused business is expected to take over the space.

Discovering history in and around South Brooklyn 📚

There’s something about Red Hook that I have always been attracted to. Maybe it’s because it reminds me of the quaint sea villages near where I grew up on the Massachusetts and Rhode Island border. It could also be the fact that it’s hard to get to for most, preserving its history and quirkiness from the hoards of tourists that flock to New York every summer. Or maybe it’s the views, which are the best in all of Brooklyn in my opinion. These three things, and its proximity to Park Slope, keep me coming back just about every week.

In the last few years, it appears Red Hook has been discovered, as many restaurants and bars have been featured on TikTok’s, reels and listicals. Each time I see one of these, I shudder at the thought of this sacred place being discovered by those who enjoy long lines at trendy places. But each year I am pleasantly surprised that the lines are few, and most places have still been “undiscovered”. Sure the lines at Red Hook Tavern, Hometown BBQ and even Strong Rope Brewery are certainly worth it on a nice summer day, but there are other places in Red Hook that remain lineless and provide just as much value. While I’d love to gatekeep these places, I think others should be able to have the experiences I have been fortunate to have in this gem of a neighborhood.

Black Flamingo Cafe (281 Van Brunt St, Brooklyn, NY 11231)

In the 19th century, Red Hook was where coffee and other items were stored after coming off of ships. It’s safe to say that Red Hook and coffee have a long history. Surprisingly enough though, there are not as many cafes as you would think in Red Hook but the few that do exist are all very very good. My favorite by far is Black Flamingo Cafe on Van Brunt Street. It’s located just down the street from the Brooklyn Ferry terminal, making it a first stop for those visiting from outside of Brooklyn. Their coffee is amazing as well as their pastries. The cafe has a vintage feel and features a beautiful back patio making it the place to be on a sunny summer morning.

Waterfront Museum (290 Conover St, Brooklyn, NY 11231)

If you’re looking for something to do during the day in Red Hook, I can’t recommend the Waterfront Museum enough. Inside an old 1914 Lehigh Valley Barge, this museum is one of the most unique in New York City by far. It is owned and operated by David sharps who also lives on the barge and raised his kids on it as well. Sharps has a wealth of knowledge of not just Red Hook, but also New York’s maritime history. The barge also hosts performances and events as well. For more information, visit their website at

• Brooklyn Pride celebrated 30 years last Saturday with the annual Brooklyn Pride Twilight Parade, which began in 1996. Happy Pride!

• Titan opened yesterday in the former Gran Electrica space in DUMBO - from Los Burritos Juarez owner Alan Delgado and renowned bartender Ivy Mix of Leyenda. They’re bringing tacos, margaritas, shareable Mexican dishes, and a large backyard space. Reservations are available.

• Trudie’s Tavern officially opens tomorrow! The highly anticipated new restaurant from the team behind GERTIE and gertrude's, opens June 19. Inspired by classic New York taverns, the menu features rotisserie chicken, a raw bar, steaks, burgers, housemade pasta, and classic cocktails in a warm neighborhood setting. Dinner service begins this week, with brunch expected to launch later this summer. Reservations now available.

• A retired 1960s FDNY fireboat has found new life as Fireboat, a floating bar now docked at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 6. The new waterfront spot serves tropical cocktails and Caribbean-inspired bites, set to be one of the more unique places to grab a drink this summer. You'll find it at the northwest end of Pier 6.

• Ode to the Orange Seats at the New York Transit Museum is now on display and celebrates one of New York City's most recognizable subway features: the orange and yellow bucket seats that became a fixture of the transit system in the 1970s. Featuring work from 14 artists across a range of mediums, the exhibit explores how an everyday part of the commute has inspired nostalgia, creativity, and connection for generations of New Yorkers.

• Applications are now open for vendors interested in participating in Atlantic Antic. The annual event returns on September 27, bringing thousands of visitors to shop, eat, and explore local businesses and makers. If you sell food, art, vintage goods, fashion, or other products, now is the time to apply for a spot!

Business Buzz: Father’s Day Edition

• The first 30 dads through the door on Father’s Day (6/21) at Threes Brewing in Gowanus get a free 12oz can of Vliet, the brewer’s flagship pilsner! Just mention Father’s Day to the bartender. And Baya Bar in Carroll Gardens is celebrating with a BOGO on their protein shakes.

Between Juneteenth celebrations, new openings like Trudie's Tavern, and unique additions like Fireboat at Pier 6, there's no shortage of things to discover this week. I hope you find something that gets you out and enjoying our neighborhood.

• Brooklyn-based playwright Bess Wohl made history on Sunday night when she won the Tony Award for Best Play for “Liberation”. Out of the four women who have won the awards, only two of them were from Brooklyn. Congrats, Bess!

• Business Buzz: Ziggy's is leaning into summer with a refreshed seasonal menu, plans to bring in outdoor dining soon, and additional mahjong nights. The restaurant is also celebrating Bosnia's unexpected World Cup run with match screenings and drink specials. • Food writer and cookbook author Alison Roman is bringing her boutique grocery concept, First Bloom, to Brooklyn Heights this fall. Plans call for a cafe, coffee program, prepared foods, baked goods, and a produce market. We'll be keeping an eye out for more details as the opening approaches.

• One of New York's most influential restaurateurs is headed to Brooklyn Heights. Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group will open its first full-service Brooklyn restaurant at the landmark Hotel Bossert. Andrea Strong, , has the scoop on what we know so far.

• Titán is heading to the former Gran Electrica space in DUMBO from Los Burritos Juarez owner Alan Delgado and renowned bartender Ivy Mix of Leyenda. They’re brining tacos, margaritas, shareable Mexican dishes, and a large backyard space.

• We have one more croissant competition update to share: La Bicyclette recently took home French Morning’s Best Original Creation award for its unique white asparagus and miso pastry. Congratulations to the neighborhood bakery on the well-deserved recognition. • A new design destination has arrived in Cobble Hill with the opening of Manes Studio, a showroom and retail shop featuring custom furniture, home décor, modern vintage pieces, handmade linens, and fine art. • Maman DUMBO now open! Maman has officially opened at 66 Water Street, bringing its signature cookies and floral-filled interiors to the neighborhood. The new location also features a dedicated events space, making it a charming new addition for coffee dates, brunches, and celebrations alike.

• The Longest Table returned to Brooklyn Heights this weekend, drawing roughly 1,300 neighbors for a massive community potluck stretching through the neighborhood. Organizers say participation doubled from the event’s inaugural year, as residents gathered around shared tables, stoops, and homemade dishes for an afternoon centered on connection and community.

• The future of Red Hook’s historic Grain Terminal remains unclear as new ideas continue to circulate for the long vacant waterfront structure. Proposals have ranged from cultural spaces and restaurants to plans involving the legendary SS United States ocean liner.

There’s something rare about walking into a space and feeling like you’ve discovered something not everyone knows about yet.

That’s exactly what it felt like stepping into 69 Atlantic at the beautifully designed Art of Play store in Brooklyn Heights - opened in the fall of 2024.

You’re first welcomed into the Art of Play store - a space filled with unique curiosities, games, and puzzles - with a cup of complimentary wine. It made me slow down and explore at the end of a busy day.

Owner Adam Rubin, along with business partners Dan and Dave Buck, envisioned the store as more than just retail. When they moved to Brooklyn, they knew a physical space was essential to bring their world of Art of Play (founded in 2013 in San Diego, California) to life.

Guests arrive early, browse, ask questions, and chat with the team. It feels less like a venue and more like being welcomed into someone’s living room or library. Right before the show begins, the shop transforms into a theater space. And suddenly, everything becomes more intimate.

The space seats just 26 people per show - small enough that every reaction is shared together with the audience.

The theater is managed by Hal Schulman, who does a bit of everything - from booking acts to pouring wine to running sound and lighting.

“I live in Prospect Heights. Adam lives in Carroll Gardens, Dan in Boerum Hill. It’s a lot of heart and a small team, but we make it work every week.”

Rather than creating distance between performer and audience, this format pulls you directly into the experience. You’re not watching magic from afar - you’re part of it.

Hal and the team bring in magicians from around the world - many of whom are deeply respected within the magic community but not necessarily mainstream names.

“The people who are the best magicians in the world aren’t necessarily the ones that are on TV or TikTok. The magic world is very small… we’re lucky enough to call a lot of these folks friends.”

Hal shared a few recent examples of the kind of talent they bring in - from Denis Behr (Munich), known for his precision and mastery of card magic, to Inés (Spain), part of a rich tradition where sleight of hand is treated as high art, to Shimpei (Japan), a classically trained violinist who performs silent, music-driven magic set to composers like Franz Liszt.

The show I attended featured Cuiffo & Sobelle (Something Amazing, March 2026), NYC-based performers who blend classic magic with unexpected moments. They are artists who have spent years refining sleight of hand, storytelling, and performance.

Every person in the audience was invited to participate in some way - my guest held onto a fully concealed card throughout the trick, yet it was revealed at the end with no obvious explanation. Another moment involved a participant who, with eyes shut, sensed exactly where someone else had been tapped - after the two shared personal memories and seemed to connect on a deeper, almost mysterious level.

Part of what makes the experience so memorable is how little you’re told going in. Guests are often brought by friends with no explanation of what’s about to happen.

Hal says: “I’m just a great believer in… under promise, over deliver. And so when people walk in and all they think is they’re looking at a really cool store and they’re sipping wine, but it’s getting kind of crowded. And then eventually the evening transforms and transpires into an hour in the company of the world’s finest sleight of hand.”
