Publisher’s note

Amid national headlines about federal immigration enforcement (ICE) and a Senate funding vote expected by January 30, I’m sharing “Know Your Rights” resources so neighbors can better understand basic legal protections if approached by law enforcement, including our own guide and a widely shared external example script circulating in connection with the upcoming funding vote - linked for information only.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

✨ Local Happenings and New Openings ✨

  • Bar Ferdinando is preparing to open this spring, bringing an Italian-inspired bar and cafe concept to the neighborhood with a focus on aperitivi, cocktails, and casual bites in a relaxed, community-oriented setting.

  • Confidant - co-owned by Daniel Grossman and Brendan Kelley (both formerly at Roberta’s) - is set to reopen early February 4 in Brooklyn Heights at the former Colonie location after their recent closure at Industry City, bringing back its intimate wine bar vibe. Eater also reports “The team is also opening a new all-day bakery and pizza restaurant with a wine bar, Lou & Bev’s, right next door (129 Atlantic Avenue) in the spring.”

  • Cambodian Restaurant Hops’ residency at Runner Up has come to an end in order to focus on planning their new space in Red Hook - backed by Red Hook Tavern owner Bill Durney.

  • iDry Cleaner has officially opened at 311 Atlantic Avenue. They’re offering high-end tailoring and expert care for fine garments.

  • A four-alarm fire swept through a large warehouse on Columbia Street in Red Hook, spreading quickly due to high winds, and upwards of 25 businesses were impacted. The blaze was extinguished by the Fire Department of the City of New York with no reported injuries, and the cause remains under investigation.

  • Worth noting: Those small metal plates embedded in Brooklyn Heights sidewalks are often old coal chute covers - a subtle reminder of how homes were once heated. Read more via Ephemeral New York.

  • The Carroll Gardens brownstone at 381 Union Street once owned by Lily Allen and David Harbour has found a buyer after its Fall 2025 listing, selling for about $7.3 million following a price cut from its original nearly $8 million ask. The four-story, fully renovated home drew attention for its standout interior design. Here’s a link to the listing

  • Writer Suzanne Spellen revisits the Great Blizzard of 1888, tracing how the storm brought daily life in Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill to a halt - with striking archival photos.

  • Beat the winter blues with our fireplace guide, highlighting the best spots in the area to stay cozy through the rest of the winter months.
