Here’s what’s happening this week:

✹ Local Happenings and New Openings ✹

  • A Cobble Hill Halloween Tradition: Kane Street’s Impaled Pumpkins 🎃

One of Cobble Hill’s quirkiest Halloween traditions can be found at the corner of Kane Street and Strong Place, where dozens of carved pumpkins are perched on the spikes of a historic iron fence. The tradition began in 1998 when local artist Jane Greengold had the idea to decorate the fence with 100 mini jack-o’-lanterns, leaving them to slowly wither through the holiday season. What started as a creative Halloween display became a beloved neighborhood tradition, with neighbors eventually joining in to help fill the fence’s 274 spikes. If you’re out exploring the neighborhood this Halloween week, it’s a fun piece of local history worth knowing about! Read more about the tradition on Atlas Obscura.

  • The NYC Marathon Returns This Weekend! On Sunday, November 1, thousands of runners will make their way through all five boroughs, including Brooklyn, where crowds will gather to cheer them on. Whether you’re running, spectating, or planning your weekend travels, be sure to check the full course map for the route and potential street closures.

  • Voting Is Underway in NYC! Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, but you don’t have to wait until then to cast your ballot! Early voting is underway across NYC, giving registered voters a chance to vote ahead of Election Day. Find your poll site here.

  • Two Brooklyn favorites are teaming up for the perfect pairing! Books Are Magic and DevociĂłn have launched a new bi-monthly subscription featuring a book handpicked by Books Are Magic and a bag of coffee selected by DevociĂłn. A fun treat for yourself or a thoughtful gift for the book and coffee lover in your life! Sign up by October 31 to be part of November’s first round.

  • Safety improvements are coming to Atlantic Avenue. The city is planning a raised crosswalk, new traffic signals, and upgraded ramps at Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Place. Construction is expected to last about a month this fall, with temporary lane reductions and crosswalk closures on weekdays from 10:00am-4:00pm.

  • A Taste of MontrĂ©al Comes to Brooklyn Heights! From October 30 through November 5, Brooklyn-based artist John Donohue will showcase his hand-drawn illustrations of MontrĂ©al’s beloved restaurants, cafĂ©s, and bars at L’Appartement 4F on Montague Street. Select prints will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting City Harvest. The bakery will also serve a special wintergreen financier created in collaboration with MontrĂ©al chef Normand Laprise.

Happy Halloween week! đŸ‘» I got to stop by NAKO’s new space this week and chat with owner Okan about what’s coming to the neighborhood. One of my favorite parts of working on this newsletter is getting to meet the people behind the local businesses we walk past every day and hear their stories firsthand. I’m excited to share more about NAKO with you all soon, so stay tuned!
