Here’s what’s happening this week:
✨ Coming Soon and Local Happenings ✨
A five-alarm fire tore through a warehouse complex on Van Brunt Street, destroying inventory and severely damaging gallery spaces at 475-499 Van Brunt. Artists and small businesses are displaced; Red Hook Open Studios in October will serve as a benefit. Support the businesses and artists affected and donate here.
Bolo Bolo Cafe and Bakery Coming Soon! Founded by local baker Isha Koya, Bolo Bolo is inspired by her late-night baking with her brother and her South Asian roots. The cafe will offer inventive pastries, seasonal drinks, and community pop-ups.
Form50 Fitness Coming Soon to 175 Remsen Street! With an anticipated opening in Winter 2026, the popular Form50 will be opening up a new studio right in our neighborhood! Check out the post and follow them for updates.
Let’s share some neighborhood love: West Brooklyn Waterfront Mutual Aid (WBWMA) is a volunteer-run group helping neighbors across Brooklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and the Columbia Waterfront. Every donation goes directly toward groceries, household supplies, and urgent needs for local families. Click HERE to contribute. You can also sign up to volunteer or reach out if you need support HERE.
A task force voted 20–8 to approve a $3.5 billion plan to redevelop 122 acres of the industrial waterfront in Red Hook and the Columbia Street Waterfront District. The plan now includes 6,000 homes (down from an initial proposal of 12,000), with 40% designated as affordable, preserves industrial space, allocates $200 million for nearby public housing improvements, and modernizes port facilities. Some residents protested, citing transparency and neighborhood impact concerns.[Brooklyn Paper] [Gothamist]
Thor Equities’ proposal for a Coney Island casino, known as “The Coney,” appears effectively terminated due to insufficient community support and the project’s inability to advance through required approval processes. [Brooklyn Magazine]

Brooklyn Real Estate 🏠
Nearly 20 years after rezoning, Downtown Brooklyn’s high-rise development has been described as lacking distinctiveness and street-level engagement, drawing criticism for missed design opportunities. There are some optimistic signs like Abolitionist Place (a 1-acre play and leisure park) completed last year. [Curbed]
As of August 2025, DUMBO experienced an 8.2% drop in median asking rents compared to the previous year. This decrease is attributed to a surge in new construction, and an increase in rental listings. Despite the decline, DUMBO remains one of Brooklyn’s most expensive neighborhoods, with a median rent of $5,600. [New York Post]
