Here’s what’s happening this week:

✨ Local Happenings and New Openings ✨

  • Café Wands, a new craft coffee house and all-day café from Chez Fifi partner Justin Wands, will replace the former Gus’s space this fall. The laptop-free space will focus on thoughtfully sourced coffee, house-made pastries and food. Andrea Strong shares the full scoop.

  • Sam’s Restaurant is officially reopening September 10 under new owner Georgia Eveluton. Grub Street reports that the nearly century-old Cobble Hill institution will retain much of its old-school charm and beloved menu, including baked clams, veal parm, pasta, and, of course, its iconic pizza.

  • Bạn Bè, NYC’s first Vietnamese American bakery, is planning its return and has launched a Kickstarter to make it happen - we are so happy to hear this news! Founded by Doris Hồ-Kane, the campaign is raising funds ahead of a planned reopening later this fall.

  • A little local love for Brooklyn General Store, which has been nominated by USA TODAY for both Best Fabric Store and Best Yarn Store! You can support the beloved Carroll Gardens shop by casting a vote.

  • What’s happening to old-school Carroll Gardens? Curbed took a deep dive into a shift we’ve been watching closely: the disappearance and changing hands of many of the Italian institutions that have defined the neighborhood for generations. Sam’s and Ferdinando’s have new owners, Caputo’s Bake Shop has closed, and the buildings housing Mazzola Bakery are now asking $9.75 million, raising questions about which pieces of old Carroll Gardens will survive the neighborhood’s next chapter.

Happy Labor Day weekend! If you’re sticking around, I recommend checking out the newly opened Pony’s and enjoying some time in Red Hook while the weather is still warm. I’m still thinking about their seasonal spritz and decadent chive butter. Whether you’re staying close to home or soaking up the last bit of summer elsewhere, there’s lots to look forward to around the neighborhood this September.
